Completed puzzles award stars based on difficulty. Easy begins with a maximum of three stars, Medium with four, and Hard with five. Each compass hint used removes one star, with every completed puzzle awarding at least one star.
There is no automatic failure for an incorrect move because ships and X marks can be changed or undone. A ranked attempt becomes a non-qualifying loss if the puzzle is restarted or replaced before it is solved.
Choose Easy for a 5×5 map, Medium for a 7×7 map, or Hard for a 9×9 map. Easy and Medium may begin with one or more ships already revealed.
Tap or click a square once to place or remove an X mark. Double-tap or double-click a square to place or remove a pirate ship.
Use deduction to place one ship in every row, column, and colored region while keeping all ships separated horizontally, vertically, and diagonally.

The Capitan's Gambit is a pirate-themed logic puzzle built around careful deduction rather than speed or combat. Each map is divided into rows, columns, and colored sea regions. The player must determine where to hide one ship in every row, one in every column, and one in every region while making sure that no ships touch, even at diagonal corners. Easy maps use a 5×5 board, Medium maps expand to 7×7, and Hard maps challenge players with a 9×9 grid and fewer starting advantages. Players can mark impossible waters with X symbols, undo previous actions, enable automatic X placement, reveal correct positions with limited compass hints, and continue unfinished voyages from saved progress. Completed puzzles award stars based on difficulty and hints used. Those stars can be spent in the built-in Star Shop to unlock alternate board markers such as the Straw Hat, Gum Fruit, Gold Hook, Slingshot, and Memory Cube. Customizable portrait and landscape layouts make the game suitable for both mobile and desktop play.
